Château Hořín

Château Hořín is a historic Baroque and Rococo château located in the village of Hořín, near Mělník in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic. Situated approximately 40 km from Prague and just 2 km from the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers, the château is set within a 10-hectare park .

History

The château’s origins trace back to 1696 when Count Heřman Jakub Černín commissioned its construction as a hunting lodge. Designed by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, the building featured Baroque elements and was adorned with paintings by F. M. Schiffer and his brother Antonín .

In 1713, František Josef Černín, Count Heřman’s successor, found the original structure insufficient and initiated a major reconstruction between 1713 and 1720. Architect František Maxmilián Kaňka transformed the hunting lodge into a more elaborate Baroque château .

Subsequent expansions occurred in the mid-18th century, including the addition of side wings, corner pavilions, and outbuildings, all aligned parallel to the original structure. A notable feature from this period is the castle chapel dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk, located in the eastern pavilion, which boasts a painted ceiling extending over both floors .

In 1760–1763, Carlo Giuseppe Bossi decorated two ground-floor rooms, known as the “Stone Rooms,” with asymmetrical stucco work, exemplifying Rococo style .

The château remained in the Černín family until the end of the 18th century, after which it was inherited by the Lobkowicz family. It remained in their possession until 1948 .
